What is the Aplin Labs Story
Hot Coffee, Hard Questions, and Long Winters
Our story started in 1994, in the Last Frontier
, Anchorage Alaska!
A few of us human scientists pondered the question of why so many organizations fail to resist the risks of bureaucratization--when the organizational structure diminishes the value of people who work in the organization--calicification for its own sake.
We often saw potential great leaders, in business, government, and civics, try to achieve bold goals, but were often, if not always, overwhelmed by the calcification of organizational structures. Our questions and concerns inspired us to study the cause-and-effects that are layered and often hidden in organizations.
We established Aplin Labs as our means of conducting research and developing technology that specialized in organizing healthy and productive work behavior. We discovered that there is great potential for "cognitive technologies," which are tools that infleunce how we think about work and the changing conditions and goals of the total organization.
We concentrated on the design and development of three kinds of cognitive technologies:
- Capability assessments - know the deep causes of performance
- Operational management - amplify the power of dedicated team
- Learning networks - reinforce employees' emerging value
Our work is based on our technology discipline, Performance Architectural Science Systems (PASS). PASS has become a powerful foundation for managing changes in organizations.
And, we drink a lot of coffee.
